Marchers in New York City's 1981 Labor Day parade protest the action of President Reagan in breaking the strike of the air controllers' union (PATCO) and ultimately destroying that union (which had supported him in the 1980 elections).  The breaking of the PATCO strike was a turning point for labor, for it opened the way for other employers to hire replacements for striking workers.
